The PEOPLES IMPROV THEATER (or The PIT) was founded in 2002 by North Carolinian and UNC alum Ali Reza Farahnakian in NYC. Ali is an alumnus of The Improv Olympic, The Second City, SNL and a founding member of Upright Citizen's Brigade (UCB) & The PIT.

After finding success in multiple New York City locations, The PIT expanded to a theater in Chapel Hill in 2017. Due to complications during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chapel Hill PIT location has been permanently closed. Here at Back to One Studios, we are excited and grateful to be partnering with such an esteem organization to bring PIT Comedy classes back to North Carolina.

The PEOPLES IMPROV THEATER's comedy school has trained many notable alumni (also called PITizens) including Kristen Schaal (Bob's Burgers & Last Man on Earth), Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt & Bridesmaids), Hannibal Buress (The Eric Andre Show), and Michelle Wolf (Michelle Wolf: Joke Show, former writer on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah). Most recently, one of The PIT's SNL Scholarship recipients, Vanessa Jackson, was hired as a writer for SNL.

Class Offerings

The PIT Improv Basics *STARTING SOON*

Mon. 1/24-2/28 @ 7-9pm

This PIT NYC approved class guides you towards the PIT improv philosophies cultivated over 20 years in NYC to create “something wonderful right away”* by using the tried-and-true basic building blocks of improv! Embrace the spirit of “Yes, and…!” until you have to say “No Thank you’” by listening and reacting to what your scene partner is giving you. NOT interrupting. “Making Statements not Questions." Learn how to interact with your established environment and find positivity in the mundane.

This six-week class taught by PIT instructor Jenn Bianchi is a great way to start or reintroduce yourself to improv, focusing on games, exercises, truthful first person monologues and 2 person scenes.

100% FUN, 0% FEAR
